How To Negotiate With Brands as an Influencer

The talk of money is always so awkward especially when the brand’s initial email or offer doesn’t mention $$$, BUT, it doesn’t hurt to negotiate!

The worst thing that could happen is that you lose the partnership. But on the other hand, what was supposed to be a “free”, unpaid, or “lowballed” job would now be fairly compensated!

How To Negotiate with Brands as an Influencer

Here are some examples on what you can respond to brands if you believe you deserve to be fairly paid for the deliverables (labor) asked:

• Love this campaign! What is your budget?/Do you have a budget? (Asking this is sometimes a blessing in disguise because one time, I almost quoted a brand 7x less than what they were willing to pay me. I had it in my gut to ask what their budget was and I was astonished with their response! I accepted the offer. But I don’t always recommend this response because some brands will quote you an embarrassingly low amount.

• Thank you so much for this opportunity and I would love to be onboard, but I’m currently prioritizing paid campaigns. I can discuss my rates with you and hopefully we can work something out.

• This is my current rate for the deliverables asked, but I’m willing to work with the budget you have. (then proceed to list down what you’re willing to do for the price they quoted you)

• Thank you so much for reaching out! I attached my rate sheet so we can further discuss details.

• (If you’re down to do work for free) I am excited to try the product! Since this is a gifting campaign, I can only commit to posting 1 IG story frame. I can discuss my rates for an in-feed post if you’re open to it.

Those are just a few examples but you get the idea.

Remember this: we accept the jobs we think we deserve.

If you think you deserve a tub of moisturizer for 3 IG story frames, and one in-feed post, go right ahead, do it! But if you truly think that you deserve xxx amount of dollars for the WORK you’re going to put in, put on your negotiating pants and get your $$$. If they’re not willing to pay up, it’s okay to decline. It never feels good to work for people who don’t see and value your work.
